Creative Time Slumber Party

Socially Superlative
November 20, 2009

This past Wednesday, November 18th, Ace Hotel New York hosted the Creative Time Slumber Party, an event celebrating the launch of a limited edition of pajamas by Will Cotton.

The line was produced by Exquisite Apparel in association with Phillips-Van Heusen. This unisex PJ set was selling for a preview-price of $150. For those who wanted something even more original, they could purchase signed Will Cotton sets for $350.

Will is clearly inspired by desserts, which are depicted in his pajama design. He shared his love for sweets with the rest of the party by having a long table set up in the center of the venue completely covered with every dessert imaginable. Each item was arranged in such a beautiful way, it took about thirty minutes for guests to dare think of disturbing the placement this edible artwork.

Cocktails and snacks were courtesy of April Bloomfield’s The Breslin. Wait staff served appetizers consisting of mini burgers, French fries, grilled cheese sandwich bites, and even fried rabbit. There were several cocktails and glasses of wine offered throughout the evening.

The dress code on the invitation read Boudoirs and Bachelor Pads, and this theme stayed true throughout the night. Book shelves, ornate furniture, and comfortable couches made one feel as if he were in a private sitting room. In one corner by the stairs stood an old-fashioned mirror. Nearby was a stack of boas, fur, silk nightgowns, and bathrobes for guests who opted to play ‘dress up.’

My personal highlight of the night was Jacob Ireland’s tarot card readings. After nervously waiting in line for my turn, I was quickly put at ease by Jacob’s reassuring demeanor. He spent about twenty minutes delving into his explanations of the cards I drew, and despite my initial reservations, I found his assessment of me quite accurate and very impressive.

Around 10pm that evening, musical guest Patrick Cleandenim performed for the crowd, with a DJ set by Matt Creed. By this time, the room was packed, and people were happily chatting away while nibbling on cookies and tarts. Perhaps it was just the sugar rush, but everyone was having a fabulous time.

ASI Spring 2010: Press Preview: Custo Barcelona, Silvia Tcherassi, and Min Agostini

Socially Superlative
November 13, 2009

Spring was in the air Wednesday night at a private press viewing for Custo Barcelona, Silvia Tcherassi, and Min Agostini for their Spring 2010 collections. Hosted by ASI Marketing Group and held in their SoHo office, magazine and website representatives were given the exclusive opportunity to sift through these three unique designer brands.

While looking at Custo’s garments, I felt a stabbing in my heart to return to Spain. Although I fell in love with the southern city of Sevilla, I was always intrigued by Barcelona, and after having to suddenly cancel a weekend getaway there two years ago, I couldn’t help but regret this decision. Imagining me wearing a flowing dress walking by the warm seaside seems quite appealing this time of year.

Custo’s collection is full of vibrant color, fun prints, and intricate detailing. Despite the loose-fitting fabrics, each piece looks effortlessly breath-taking and will easily compliment a woman’s body. Perhaps I’m biased, but I had trouble taking my eyes off these clothes. The laid-back elegance of the brand will likely continue in popularity among consumers through the next season. A large plasma screen played their runway show from Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, allowing press to view the non-restricting movement of the garments.

Silvia Tcherassi, a native from Columbia, South America, displayed a collection that incorporated bright colors with bold accessories. Strapless dresses, short skirts, and loose-fitting tops mix and match well together, which will enable customers to display their own personality through the garments. I particularly appreciate Silvia’s ability to create long dresses with chic ruffling and her use of feminine prints to create clothes that woman will feel beautiful wearing.

The Min Agostini collection was a bit more focused on architectural construction. Although perhaps less wearable in everyday like than the other two brands, these garments do stand on their own. Most pieces were made in white and other neutral colors, giving the clothes a soft, angelic feel to them. Small, round fabric folds on specific garments gave these looks a floral appeal. When looking at runway stills from New York Fashion Week, the construction serves as a major highlight. Pockets, silhouettes, and head pieces added to the simple yet conceptual collection.

Norisol Ferrari: Fall/Winter Collection

Socially Superlative
November 3, 2009

The debut bespoke Fall/Winter collection of Norisol Ferrari was unveiled this past Sunday at Safe Harbor NYC. Designer and brand namesake Norisol Ferrari entitled her collection, “The Beginning,” and displayed sixteen very different looks. Dancers from Merce Cunningham, Joffrey, and other fantastic professional dancers modeled her eccentric line of women’s coats. Starting the night off with complimentary wine, guests socialized and reveled in the unique setting surrounding them.

The production as a whole was very theatrical. Taking place one day after Halloween proved to be an appropriate choice, with both mood and décor reflecting the ominous theme. Slow music composed in minor keys echoed through the speakers, similar to tunes one might hear while walking through a haunted house. Lights remained dimmed throughout the show and smoke filled the room. New York’s professional dancers each embodied a specific character, and their facial expressions, bold make-up, and slow moving strides added to the overall effect of the sinister evening.

Magazine editors and other fashion insiders were seated in wooden chairs down the runway, giving every guest and up close and personal view of the detailed and hand-crafted garments. Although the majority of the coats were black, each piece had a particular style and personality. Ferrari uses luxurious natural fabrics and hand-makes every piece, leaving clients with a one-of-a-kind piece altered to their specific proportions. Norisol incorporates her interest in ancient civilizations into her well-constructed, tailored coats.

Norisol Ferrari was born and raised in New York City, beginning her fashion career at the young age of fifteen, where she interned at a button company. Norisol has worked in both the United States and throughout Europe with Donatella Girombelli, Carole Little Furs, Katharine Hamnett and Gas Jeans. In 1999, Norisol served as co-founder of 2BNN, a ready-to-wear line she launched with friend Nora Nardone. Ferrari offers fittings for her garments in New York City and around the world.

Tommy Hilfiger: Spring 2010 Collection

Socially Superlative
November 1, 2009

A private press viewing for Tommy Hilfiger’s Men’s and Women’s Spring 2010 collection was held at the designer’s showroom this past Thursday. Public Relations Manager for Menswear, Diego Louro, and Senior Communications Manager, Melissa Lun, happily greeted press members as they entered the studio.

In the main area, a champagne table was set up for guests. One side of the room showcased women’s clothing, while the other side consisted of menswear, beach towels, and swimsuits. The Hilfiger runway show from September’s fashion week played on a large plasma television screen. This was helpful for guests to better visualize how the clothes appear in everyday life.

The next room showcased the rest of Hilfiger’s collections. Clothes, sunglasses, watches, purses, and shoes surrounded the center table, where more beachwear was displayed. Louro explained that the concept behind both collections is a California, all-American state of mind. For women, each garment is special enough that is can be worn on its own. The clothes are feminine without being too girly. The masculine influence of plaid shirts make this brand a constant stable in consumer closets.

The look book illustrates how Tommy Hilfiger’s designs are classic, original pieces of art that do not need to be over-worked or adorned with accessories. Soft floral dresses and neutral tan, white, and black pieces give the women’s collection a cool, confident, and clean look. The men’s collection incorporates the standard red, white, and blue colors in plaid and striped patterns.

Public Relations Assistant, Jessica Stambaugh, explained that next year marks the 25th Anniversary for the global brand. One new element added this year is collaboration with designer Edmundo Castillo on the shoe designs. Gladiator-looking sandals and heels are constructed with rope material. This original concept seems to be one of the collection’s strong points this season.

As far as prices go, most items are generally affordable. Taking into consideration the tough economy, shoes are sold for under $200, with runway accessories priced slightly higher. Several holiday items will be available this winter, made in cashmere and denim materials. Scarves, hats, wallets and ties can each be purchased for under $100. The sole exception will be ten pairs of red Tommy Hilfiger ice-skates. This limited edition item will be sold at the company’s new global flagship store on Fifth Avenue.

Oceana New York Launch party

Socially Superlative
October 22, 2009

Oceana celebrated the launch of their New York City office this past Monday evening. The party was hosted by Alexander & Brenda von Schweickhardt and held in their beautiful Manhattan penthouse. Guests stopped to pose for photographs before making their way up the spiraled staircase and into the main event.

Oceana Board Chairman, Keith Addis, and Executive Vice-President, Jim Simon proudly welcomed their guests. Addis and Simon later gave well-received introductions about the nonprofit organization, which concluded with their announcing the launch of the New York Office.

Both levels of the apartment reflected an ocean theme that was present in every detail of decoration. Seated on a window ledge leading to the upstairs penthouse were two models dressed in head-to-tail mermaid attire. Their colorful and shiny outfits made quite a splash that night. Upstairs, waiters served delicious gourmet hors d’oeuvres and guests were treated to specialty drinks donated by Zaya. Tiffany & Co. sponsored the event, with Foundation President Fernanda Kellogg in attendance.

Celebrities and well-known members of New York Society attended the exclusive launch in support of the nonprofit’s continued contributions to ocean environments. Gina Gershon, Sue Cohn Rockefeller, Law & Order’s Sam Waterston, fashion designers Tommy Hilfiger and John Varvatos all shared in the festivities. Music producer Nile Rodgers, New York Jets’ Damien Woody, and actor Jeff Goldblum were among other note-worthy attendees. They were all truly excited to be a part of such an honorable organization.

Bettina Alonso, Vice President, Development, was thrilled to have such a successful showing for the event. Extending the launch an extra hour gave people an opportunity to learn more about the situation of our oceans.
“We had a lot of supporters with us, Board Members and Ocean Council members, as well as new faces who have shown interest in knowing more about what how we achieve victories.”

Alonso worked in the European headquarters in Spain for two years before moving to New York, and feels that it is the perfect location.
“New Yorkers have an international approach to topics, as well as Oceana. I also felt, that our very focused results oriented approach is something that appeals to New Yorkers.”

Oceana is a nonprofit international advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. With representatives present in North America, Europe, and South and Central America, it makes sense that they locate workers in a global city like New York. Founded in 2001, Oceana staffers and volunteers work tirelessly to reduce pollution and help prevent the destruction of fish, marine mammal, and other sea life habitats and populations.

Here is Oceana’s official mission statement, courtesy of Bettina Alonso
:
Oceans cover 71 percent of the globe, and they are as important to us as they are vast. Not only do they control our climate; they are the primary source of protein for 1 billion people around the world. They drive our economies. For millions of sailors, swimmers, and vacationers of all stripes, they offer a refuge from the metal and concrete that encase our working lives.

Oceana seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy and abundant as they were in our grandparents’ youth. We look to a future in which dolphin sightings are common along any temperate coast; in which the mighty swordfish, marlin and tuna are abundant once again; in which whales and sea turtles thrive, cod are plentiful on both sides of the Atlantic, local fishing cultures evolve rather then decline and in which fish are a safe, growing and plentiful source of food around the world.

In the last few decades we have seen the benefits of restored rivers and lakes – for ecological and economic health – in many parts of the world. We can reap the same benefits from healthy oceans. We can restore ocean ecosystems that will sustain us, entertain us, amaze us and generate jobs around the world for centuries to come.

Banana Republic: A Decade on Fifth

Socially Superlative
October 20, 2009

Banana Republic proudly celebrated their Tenth Anniversary by hosting an exclusive event at their store located on Fifth Avenue and near Rockefeller Center. Despite the horrendous weather Thursday night, guests were not easily deterred from taking part in the festivities. Quite the lengthy line formed outside the door.

The New Yorker served as a proud sponsor for the brand, and many guests received complimentary gift bags which included a Banana Republic women’s fragrance and an edition of the magazine. The DJ played up-beat music that appealed to shoppers of all ages.

Guests were greeted to glasses of champagne upon entering through the store’s front doors. Wine was also offered at tables set up on the upper two levels. Bite sized red velvet, vanilla, and chocolate cupcakes were distributed to eager shoppers as they browsed through the Fall 2009 collection. Those who spent over $100, received 25% off their purchases.

Each corner of the store was organized well and nicely decorated. Black and white framed sketches lined the wall, complimenting the simple elegance Banana Republic is known and loved for. A comfortable lounge area allowed guests to socialize before heading to the clothing racks.

Men shopped for clothes on the downstairs level, while women’s clothing took up both the main level and the top floor. Many shoppers were seen looking through the extensive sale rack, which offered a wide variety of discounted outerwear, shoes, and accessories.

The boot section and the jewelry displays were popular picks for many women as well. Despite the crowded store, each customer was given individual attention. Many purchases were made that night, surely boosting Banana’s sales in a tough economy. Beginning at 7pm and ending two hours later, smiles were seen on customers’ faces as they headed back out to face the cold, rainy weather.

Hernan Lander Spring 2010

Hernan Lander

October 5, 2009

Socially Superlative

Designer Hernan Lander held a private viewing of his Spring 2010 Collection at his studio right across from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). After showing at Gotham Hall during New York Fashion Week, Lander opted to make his clothes more accessible to press and buyers by allowing them to view his designs in the very place where they were first created.

Francesca Simon, Managing Director for iConcept Media Group, the organization handling Lander’s Public Relations, explained her decision to become involved in the development of this designer. “Following the fashion show, the clothes were so incredible, I felt people needed to see them up close.”

By viewing the garments in this way, buyers and press were able to gain insight into Lander’s design aesthetic. One wall was covered with dozens of sketches and fabric swatches. Hernan’sshoe collection was displayed on a table in the back of the studio, positioned near his sewing machines. Two models alternated trying on different looks, while staff members delved into fabric and styling choices. The whole process was highly organized and low-key.

The Dominican-American designer was very inspired by African culture, and incorporated several themes into his garments. Simon explained his goal of maintaining a balance between nature and industrialization. Upon receiving a photograph of a child Hernan had been sponsoring, the young designer was shocked to see the child playing with a zipper instead of an actual toy. From this image, Hernan decided to integrate the zipper into a major aspect of his collection.

Hernan’s clothes are quite sellable, primarily due to their marketability to women of different shapes and sizes. In choosing neutral colors such as black, white, and cream, Hernanaims to reflect the nature in Africa. By adding gold metallic detailing, his designs begin to stand out. Women will also enjoy wearing these garments because they flatter the curves of the body. Through draping flowing material, women can hide imperfections or insecurities they have with their own bodies. For those who are flat chested, Hernan has created gowns with intricate detailing that instead draw attention to their back.

Women can wear Hernan’s clothes as separates or they can mix and match one or more garments together. One standout piece is a white vest with black zippers in a crisscross pattern.Lander’s clothes are full of contrasts; they are edgy and feminine, hard and soft, classic and bold. The silk wool and jersey fabrics allow Hernan to create different looks, all flattering the body while staying true to his theme of nature and industrialization.

Lander is very well known in the Dominican-Republic, where he dresses and styles celebrities. At the end of October, he will unveil his newest collection, a menswear line made in comfortable jersey material. He also plans to take his jewelry sketches to the next level by incorporating them into future collections. Hernan has previously collaborated with designersRogelio Velasco and Ralph Lauren. He worked for Donna Karen before developing his own line.
